Veterinary Assistant Program 1015 CourseCatalog/images/new.gif

Veterinary assistants support the veterinarian and veterinary technicians with the daily functions of the veterinary clinic. Most veterinarians and technicians will say that they cannot do their jobs without veterinary assistants. They help ensure that things run smoothly, and patients receive the care and attention they need. There is a large list of responsibilities that a veterinary assistant will develop, and proper training is necessary to succeed. Veterinary assistants are somewhat equivalent to certified nurse assistants. Primary duties include patient comfort and husbandry, hospital housekeeping and maintenance, animal restraint, feeding, walking, laboratory skills and other duties as directed by a veterinarian or technician. Assistants may be trained to answer phones, book appointments, and assist clients. Many will go on to become technicians, supervisors, managers, and even veterinarians. An externship will be assigned to each student, which involves mentored hands-on experience in a local veterinary practice. This program will provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the field of veterinary medicine as a well-rounded veterinary assistant.
